What Would Have Happened If North Korea Won The Korean War

North Korea's Potential Paths to Victory in the Korean War

Three Scenarios That Could Have Resulted in a North Korean Triumph

Unilateral Intervention by the United States

If the United States had decided not to intervene in the Korean War, the North Korean People's Army (KPA) could have potentially rolled up South Korean forces and captured the southern city of Pusan. Without US support, South Korea's defense capabilities would have been significantly weakened, allowing the KPA to advance unchecked.

Absence of Soviet Veto at the UN Security Council

In 1950, the Soviet Union boycotted the UN Security Council, allowing for the passage of a resolution authorizing military intervention in Korea. Had the Soviet delegate been present and vetoed the resolution, the United States and its allies would have been unable to legally justify their involvement in the war. This would have created a vacuum that North Korea could have exploited to its advantage.

Totalitarian Dictatorship of the Kim Dynasty

The Kim dynasty has ruled North Korea with an iron fist since the Korean War. The country's totalitarian dictatorship has enabled the regime to maintain a strong military and suppress internal dissent. Under these conditions, North Korea would have been more resilient to international pressure and could have potentially protracted the war indefinitely.
